I'm trying upgrade my kid's computer - it has a PM-9800 board which will
accept a Pentium MMX P55C CPU or a AMD K6 which will run at 233 max.The
minimum voltage setting the board allows is 2.5V. Any ideas?

Not much point, really. You'll end up spending more on parts
than buying an appropriately priced used computer. You didn't
mention what CPU is currently there, if any, but chances are
that you won't be able to use much faster of a CPU than what
you mentioned with that motherboard.

If you are just trying to learn by doing, you'll most likely end up
needing to replace the motherboard so that it can take a CPU
that's worth upgrading to. Then you may find that the new mobo
needs different memory, so you'd have to get that. If the mobo
is ATX and you have an AT case, you'll have to get a new case,
probably, as well as an ATX power supply since I'm pretty sure
you have an AT in that computer.

Upgrading a computer that obsolete is a headache and ends up
being more of a "replace just about every single part" project vs.
an "upgrade" project.

fwiw, I've seen computers minus monitor for under $200 that
were quite good. My stepdad got one several months ago for
$175 that has a Pentium III 800MHz CPU (Coppermine),
512MB Micron CAS2 memory, 20GB 7200RPM IBM hard
drive, 300W ATX power supply, Antec case, 3Com 3C905BTX
PCI network card, and SuperMicro motherboard. Oh yeah,
3.5" floppy drive as well. No optical drive, but those are cheap.
No keyboard, speakers, or mouse, either.

HTH, and good luck.

I would follow Mr. Lammy's advice - unless you enjoy tinkering with
(obsolete) computer parts and just want a working system - get a complete
one sans the monitor. Check the local (region 31) area of eBay desktops;
some very capable systems for reasonable prices.
